Your menstrual cycle is a vital part of your reproductive health, governed by a complex interplay of hormones. Knowing what happens during each phase can help you anticipate changes in your body and emotions. Here’s a breakdown of the four key phases of the menstrual cycle:

HC 3  - Your Menstrual Cycle Phases

1. __The Menstrual Phase (Menstruation)__<br>
__What It Is:__ Commonly known as your period, this phase marks the official start of your menstrual cycle.<br>
__Duration:__ Menstruation typically lasts between three to seven days.<br>
__Process:__ During this phase, the lining of your uterus sheds through your cervix and vagina, resulting in menstrual blood flow. Interestingly, the average total amount of menstrual blood is about a quarter of a cup.

2. __The Follicular Phase__<br>
__Purpose:__ This phase prepares your body for potential pregnancy.<br>
__Hormonal Changes:__ Estrogen signals the uterine lining to thicken, while follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles, each containing an egg.<br>
__Ovulation Readiness:__ Usually, one egg will mature for fertilization, and estrogen levels rise dramatically, peaking just before ovulation. In a typical 28-day cycle, ovulation occurs around day 14.

3. __The Ovulation Phase__<br>
__Key Event:__ A surge in estrogen triggers a spike in luteinizing hormone (LH), leading to the rupture of a follicle and the release of a mature egg.<br>
__Timing:__ Ovulation generally occurs 11 to 16 days before your next period, with day 14 being common in a regular 28-day cycle.<br>
__Egg Journey:__ The egg travels from the ovary through the fallopian tube toward the uterus, where the uterine lining continues to thicken in preparation for a potential pregnancy. The egg remains viable for fertilization for about 24 hours.

4. __The Luteal Phase__<br>
__Post-Ovulation Changes:__ After ovulation, the empty follicle transforms into a corpus luteum, which produces estrogen and high levels of progesterone.<br>
__Uterine Preparation:__ Progesterone prepares the uterine lining for a fertilized egg.<br>
__Outcomes:__ If fertilization occurs, the egg implants in the uterine lining, and pregnancy begins. If not, hormonal levels drop, leading to the shedding of the uterine lining, and your period starts, signaling the beginning of a new cycle.

A period calendar is a great way to make sure PMS or your period don&rsquo;t take you by surprise. This doesn't mean you have to bust out the paper calendar and actually mark the day &mdash; more on that later, though. Charting gives you more control over your reproductive health and helps you understand your own body rhythms.

What to Track</strong>
<p>
Keeping track of your period symptoms on a monthly cycle calendar is easy, but it&rsquo;s one of those things that won&rsquo;t work unless you do it regularly. On top of noting when you start and stop your period, try writing down when you get cramps, mood changes, changes in your vaginal discharge, pain when you don&rsquo;t expect it, or other symptoms you think might be period-related.
</p>
<p>
After a few cycles, you&rsquo;ll likely see, a pattern. Then you can even foresee symptoms and be ready for them. PMS coming up? Stash some medicine in your purse. Period due? Stock up on pads so you aren&rsquo;t caught without one when you need it most!
</p>
<p>
If you've been having periods for a while, you know what your normal flow is. Keep track of light or heavy bleeding and any changes in color and texture (like blood clots). Also note any unusual vaginal secretions that occur during the month. You may notice a thicker or stickier discharge at mid-cycle &mdash; this is normal and means you&rsquo;re ovulating.

Why It&rsquo;s Important
</strong>

Regularly recording everything about your cycle, even if it feels weird, can give your doctor important information. Next time you visit your doctor, he or she will probably ask you the date of your last period. If you track your periods, the answer will be really easy! And that&rsquo;s not the only thing your doctor will find helpful to know.
