I am a wife and mother of three. Last year I noticed my middle child, my daughter Autumn go from happily playing with dolls to crying or being angry at the drop of a hat. I thought it was early for her to be experiencing PMS symptoms because she was only eleven years old. Well I wasn't going to sit around and wait for nature to take its course. I wanted to head the period drama off at the pass. So I came up with the idea of throwing her a PMS Party. PMS stands for Pre Menstrual Survival. I gave out PMS Party invitations and watched the look on the moms and daughters faces when they found out what the party was about. We got lots of laughs and some raised eyebrows. Needless to say, few young girls turn down a party. That meant the moms were in.
We had a great time at the party. All the girls received gift bags from their mom and played period charades, we had product (Always Pads for demo, and Panty liners for nametags) demonstration, and I gave a presentation to educate them on their period. This went better than I had anticipated. The girls were full of questions that they may have been embarrassed to ask their mom in a one-on-one setting. I was very pleased to see that some of the moms were enlightened about things they were not quite sure of. We all enjoyed food and a movie to top it off.
My party for period preparedness worked great. My daughter started her period this past summer. She handled it beautifully, she knew what to do. That is all I wanted. Success, without all of the drama that could have been without the party.
This turned on a light bulb in my head. I felt that if this helped my daughter and the girls who attended our party, how many more girls could benefit that might not have anyone to discuss this very important subject. I found out through my doctor that there are many moms who avoid having this talk and just wait for the inevitable. I figured I could do it for them. This is a wonderful way to educate girls on feminine products, body changes and a chance for them to express and pose any questions or concerns. This is an informative discussion for moms and daughters in a comfortable party setting. This is so much fun.
I just feel that if we discuss this with our girls, it can give them a sense of empowerment about this natural event that is always just looked at as negative. Our period will never be a joy, but it doesn't have to mean misery. My daughter has not skipped a beat due to her period. I am so very proud of her. This has been such a relief for moms who were wondering how to address this. My parties are just the beginning of my idea for girls. I want for our feminine product companies to come out with a 'tween and teen line of products. Our girls deserve a section devoted to helping them on their journey to becoming strong and confident women.
I love being a woman, and I want for my daughter and other girls to look forward to a wonderful transition in their life. I am Soijett Brooks a.k.a. ThePMS Girl!
