I think I?m the ?Fresh Face of Always? because I truly believe that young people can change the world. I have been involved in my community since I was little, but at fourteen, I organized Toys For Teens, a program that provides holiday gifts for needy teenagers during the holiday season. Organizations that serve families during that time of year find that people are always donating dolls and toy trucks for little ones, but seem to forget that teenagers are kids too. To date I have raised nearly $250,000 worth of teen gifts for organizations and families across the country. I appeared on the TODAY show to help highlight the need nationwide and now have teens forming chapters in 15 states. In a thank you note I received from House of Hope (an organization that houses moms and their children while their moms are in drug therapy) they told me that it was the first time some of their teenagers had EVER received a gift during the holidays at all! My goal locally for 2007 is to donate 1,000 portable CD players and CD?s. http://www.toysforteens.net
I was an early college student and at nineteen I am a Junior at Weber State University. As an Anthropology major, Human Rights is a hot button for me. I?ve recently received a grant for my new program that will start this March called Human Rights for Teens and Tykes. It is a FREE Saturday workshop that helps youth ages 8 ? 17 understand the cultures and customs of different countries with a strong emphasis on diversity and tolerance. It will involve a ?Hunger Banquet? where only three or four of them get a fine, full course meal, while all of the others have a small scoop of rice and beans. This shows them the reality of what it is like for most of the people in the world. It also involves a cultural art show and exposure to music from many different cultures. Understanding other cultures opens the door to understanding, which, hopefully, will help create a better environment for us all to live together more peacefully. My goal is to take this traveling workshop to every state in the country.
I now serve on a National Youth Advisory Board and will be helping to distribute five million dollars to non-profit organizations that encourage youth service later this month.
I think that my passion for community service comes from my mother. If I ever felt out of sorts, especially during ?that time of the month? she would tell me to go do something nice for someone else, and I?d find that I would feel much better. Even something simple like taking cookies to a friend helps me take my mind off my personal discomfort and it is replaces with a feeling of fun. But something like an ?accident? can ruin the very best attitude. To feel really secure I ONLY use Always with Flexi-Wings. As a girl with fairly heavy periods, Flexi-Wings are the worlds? greatest invention because embarrassing moments have become a thing of the past.
Always with Flexi-Wings gives me the security that I can live my life without interruption. Thinking outside of myself helps me through the uncomfortable days and is what makes me face the world with confidence. A confident woman is a beautiful woman. So thanks Always, for helping me feel beautiful no matter what time of the month!
